ATIK EPDM'NİN SBS İLE BİRLİKTE KULLANIMININ BİTÜM ÖZELLİKLERİ ÜZERİNDEKİ ETKİSİNİN ARAŞTIRILMASI

Abstract

Artan trafik ve iklim koşullarında yetersiz kalan geleneksel bağlayıcıların performansını iyileştirmek amacıyla en fazla kullanılan katkı maddelerinden biri olan SBS'nin maliyeti fazladır. Bu nedenle günümüzde farklı katkı maddeleri arayışı devam etmektedir. Son zamanlarda hem çevresel sürdürülebilirlik sağlama hem de maliyetleri düşürmesi nedeniyle atık malzemelere yönelim söz konusudur. Bu çalışmada, geri dönüştürülmüş EPDM kauçuğunun tek başına ve SBS ile birlikte bitüm modifikasyonunda kullanımı araştırılmıştır. Çalışma kapsamında saf bağlayıcı, %4 SBS, %8 ve %10 EPDM ile bunların %2 SBS içeren 8E2S ve 10E2S formülasyonlarından oluşan numuneler hazırlanmıştır. Numuneler üzerinde reolojik özellikleri incelemek amacıyla penetrasyon, yumuşama noktası, dönel viskozimetre, BBR, DSR, MSCR deneyleri; fiziksel, kimyasal ve morfolojik incelemeler yapmak amacıyla depolama stabilitesi, FTIR ve SEM analizi gerçekleştirilmiştir. Yapılan analizler, EPDM'nin tek başına yumuşama noktası, viskozite ve tekerlek izi direncini artırmasına rağmen faz ayrımı eğilimini yükselttiğini; SBS'nin ise elastikiyet, yaşlanma direnci ve sıcaklık duyarlılığını geliştirdiğini göstermiştir. Ortak modifikasyon stratejisi özellikle %10 EPDM + %2 SBS (10E2S) formülasyonunda öne çıkmış; bu bağlayıcı modifiye edilmemiş bitüme kıyasla Jnr değerlerinde dört kattan fazla azalma, yüksek elastik geri kazanım, üstün faz stabilitesi ve düşük sıcaklıkta daha esnek davranış sergilemiştir. Ayrıca, %50 daha az SBS içermesine rağmen %4 SBS katkılı bağlayıcıdan daha yüksek performans göstermiştir. SEM analizleri yoğun ve bütünleşik polimer matrisi oluşumunu, FTIR bulguları ise oksijen difüzyonunun sınırlandığını ve oksidatif yaşlanmanın azaldığını ortaya koymuştur. Bu bağlamda çalışma, atık EPDM'nin SBS ile birlikte asfalt bağlayıcılarına entegre edilmesinin yalnızca teknik performans açısından değil, aynı zamanda ekonomik ve çevresel yararlar açısından da önemli avantajlar sunduğunu ortaya koymaktadır.In order to improve the performance of conventional binders that remain insufficient under increasing traffic and climatic conditions, one of the most widely used additives is SBS; however, its cost is high. For this reason, the search for alternative additives continues today. Recently, there has been a tendency towards waste materials due to their ability to provide environmental sustainability as well as reduce costs. In this study, the use of recycled EPDM rubber alone and in combination with SBS in bitumen modification was investigated. Within the scope of the study, samples consisting of pure binder, 4% SBS, 8% and 10% EPDM, as well as the formulations 8E2S and 10E2S containing 2% SBS, were prepared. On these samples, penetration, softening point, rotational viscometer, BBR, DSR, and MSCR tests were performed to examine the rheological properties; and storage stability, FTIR, and SEM analyses were carried out to investigate physical, chemical, and morphological properties. The analyses revealed that although EPDM alone increased the softening point, viscosity, and rutting resistance, it also raised the tendency for phase separation; whereas SBS improved elasticity, aging resistance, and temperature sensitivity. The combined modification strategy stood out particularly in the 10% EPDM + 2% SBS (10E2S) formulation; this binder, compared to unmodified bitumen, exhibited more than a fourfold reduction in Jnr values, high elastic recovery, superior phase stability, and more flexible behavior at low temperatures. Moreover, despite containing 50% less SBS, it demonstrated better performance than the binder modified with 4% SBS. SEM analyses revealed the formation of a dense and integrated polymer matrix, while FTIR findings showed that oxygen diffusion was restricted and oxidative aging was reduced. In this context, the study demonstrated that integrating waste EPDM with SBS into asphalt binders provides not only technical performance improvements but also significant economic and environmental advantage.
