Çalışma kapsamında sessiz dönem Hollywood sinemasından The Seik (Şeyh), 11 Eylül öncesi sinemasına örnek olarak Not Without My Mother (Kızım Olmadan Asla) ve 11 Eylül saldırıları sonrasındaki durumu incelemek adına The Reluctant Fundamentalist (Zoraki Radikal) filmleri ile sınırlı tutularak, Teun A. van Dijk'in Eleştirel Söylem Analizi yöntemi doğrultusunda incelenmiştir. Araştırmanın son bölümünü oluşturan altıncı bölümde ise The Seik (Şeyh), Not Without My Mother (Kızım Olmadan Asla) ve The Reluctant Fundamentalist (Zoraki Radikal) filmleri Eleştirel Söylem Analizi kapsamında Hollywood klasik anlatı kalıbı üzerinden makro ve mikro düzeylerde, tematik ve söylem üzerinden analize tabi tutulmuştur.
From its early days, Western cinema has aimed to construct a discourse based on power through representations of the East produced through stories, characters, and settings. Muslim identity has been portrayed ideologically as dangerous, mysterious, backward, and exotic, and the representation of Muslim women has been reproduced through codes such as silent, passive, and victimized. Through these representations, not only the position of Muslim women characters in cinema but also ideological perspectives based on the East-West dichotomy have been reproduced. Based on this, this thesis examines how the image of Muslim women in Western cinema has been constructed through films from the past to the present, through which narrative and discursive strategies it has been circulated, and to what extent it has changed over time. This study focuses on three films from early Hollywood cinema: The Seik, Not Without My Mother (as an example of pre-9/11 cinema), and The Reluctant Fundamentalist (to examine the situation after the 9/11 attacks). The films are analyzed using Teun A. van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis method. Using a qualitative approach, the films, examined according to ESA within the framework of classic Hollywood narrative structures, offer an opportunity to understand the image of Muslim women in Western cinema due to their representation of different periods and narrative trends. The films are treated as texts, examined from a critical distance without making definitive judgments, aiming to make visible the discourse behind the representations. To better present the subject, the first section outlines the main points of the study, while the second section defines the scope, methodology, and limitations of the research. The third chapter examines Islamophobia and other ideological perspectives in order to understand the conceptual framework influencing the representation of Muslim women in Western cinema. The fourth chapter details the dissemination of Islamophobic discourses through media and cinema under the influence of Orientalism. The fifth chapter examines the marginalized identities and the representation of Muslim women in Western cinema, focusing on discourses constructed through the concept of "the other." The sixth and final chapter of the research subjects the films The Seik, Not Without My Mother, and The Reluctant Fundamentalist to critical discourse analysis at macro and micro levels, thematically and discursively, within the framework of classic Hollywood narrative patterns. Based on the literature review and theoretical readings conducted at the beginning of this thesis, selected films were evaluated. Accordingly, the findings indicate that the prejudiced representations of Muslims and Muslim women in Western cinema, from the early period onwards, portraying them as "mysterious," "exotic," and "dangerous," have shifted over time, particularly after the 9/11 attacks, towards fear-based "enemy" and "dangerous" definitions, leading to racism, Islamophobia, and xenophobia. In the recent period, despite a small number of more neutral or positive representations, it was concluded that the existing forms of representation still maintain their position.
