The Early Abbâsîd period (750–900) marks a significant phase in the development of international transportation and trade in East Africa. During this era, the expansion of Islam enabled Arabs and other Muslim communities to establish extensive commercial ties with the coastal regions of East Africa. The Zanj Coast, particularly the port cities of Mogadishu, Kilwa, Mombasa, Berbera, Sofala, and Zanzibar, emerged as strategic maritime trade hubs. These ports functioned as important commercial centers where valuable commodities such as gold, silver, ivory, spices, textiles, precious stones, live animals, and slaves were exchanged. The commercial interactions established by Arab merchants with local populations were not merely economic but also fostered profound cultural and social exchanges. Through trade, Islam spread among indigenous communities, contributing to the diversification of East Africa's cultural landscape. Moreover, the wealth and resources generated from trade enhanced the economic strength of the Abbâsîd administration and contributed to the broader development of Islamic civilization. As trade expanded, transportation methods evolved accordingly. Traditional Arab sailing vessels became increasingly effective in traversing long distances across the Indian Ocean. These maritime technologies formed the backbone of both regional and international trade, significantly transforming the socio-economic structure of East Africa. This study explores the historical geography of East Africa during the Early Abbâsîd period, the conceptual framework of trade, the typologies of merchants, major traditional trade routes, and the commercial connections across the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, and the Indian and Chinese maritime networks. It also provides a detailed examination of the traded commodities, key port cities along the East African coast, and developments in maritime practices and shipbuilding techniques.
