| dc.description.abstract | In his book titled Status Anxiety, Alain de Botton focuses on a significant issue that plagues contemporary societies and individuals. He attempts to interpret status based on the worth and significance of the individual in the eyes of society. According to him, thoughts such as standing on one rung of each social hierarchy ladder, maintaining this position, and the possibility of falling to a lower rung are a significant source of anxiety for the individual. The dichotomy of success and failure is closely related to the fear of societal judgments, i.e., the fear of what others think about us. In social life, status is determined by success, and failure is harshly evaluated. This circumstance induces in individuals a fear of losing status as a universal emotion. In his work, he argues that status anxiety has the potential to cause individuals serious sadness and grief, and that the desire for a certain position in society is functional for the individual, but can result in death when taken to an extreme. He argues that the most effective solution to the problem of status anxiety is to attempt to comprehend and discuss it. The author examines the causes of status anxiety within the context of a lack of love, snobbery, expectation, meritocracy, and trust, using numerous historical examples. Taking inspiration from philosophers, literary, artistic, political, religious, and bohemian figures from the past, he also presents the efforts to overcome this anxiety in a comprehensive and fluid manner. | |
