STYLE IN MODERN ENGLISH POETRY: A STYLISTIC ANALYSIS OF SELECTED POEMS IN TED HUGHES' POETIC SEQUENCE CROW

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Ted Hughes'un Karga dizisinden seçilen şiirleri, Leech (1969) ve Short'un (1996) biçembilim metoduna dayalı olarak analiz etmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmanın ilk bölümünde, 20. yüzyıl modern İngiliz şiirinin genel özellikleri, dönemin önemli şairleri ve şiirsel hareketleri temel alınarak açıklanmış ve modern şiire yön veren İngiliz şairler ve şiirleri incelenmiştir. Modern döneme ait İngiliz bir şair olan Ted Hughes'un şiir stili ve şiir dizisi Karga ya detaylı olarak bu bölümde yer verilmiştir. Çalışmanın devamında takip edilen yöntem ayrıntılarıyla açıklanmış ve yöntemin Ted Hughes'un seçili şiirlerine uygulanması sonucu elde edilen bulgular sunulmuştur.

This study aims to analyse selected poems by Ted Hughes in his Crow by applying Leech (1969) and Short's (1996) stylistic methods of foregrounding. The first part of the study presents the general characteristics of the 20th century modern English poetry focusing on the prominent figures and movements of the era. It gives a general description of modern poets and poems that shape the era. It continues with a general account of Ted Hughes. As a modern English poet, Hughes' style and his poetic sequence Crow are explained in detail, in this part of the study. In the continuation of the study, the followed method is explained broadly and the findings which are acquired as a result of applying the method to Hughes' poems are presented.
