This study was conducted as a randomised controlled trial to determine the effect of virtual reality glasses (VR) and the Benson Relaxation Technique (BRT) on anxiety and happiness levels in patients who have undergone bariatric surgery. The study was conducted at the General Surgery Department of Fırat University Hospital between December 2024 and May 2026. The study population comprised all patients who underwent bariatric surgery at this centre, with a sample size of 180 patients (SGG group: n=60; BGT group: n=60; control group: n=60). The Patient Information Form, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and the Oxford Happiness Scale—Short Form were used to collect the data. No intervention was applied to the control group. Patients in the experimental group received a total of six sessions—twice daily for three days, starting two hours after surgery; the virtual reality headset group received VR glasses, the Benson Relaxation Technique group received BRT, and no intervention was performed on the control group. In addition to descriptive statistics, the analysis of the data involved the use of the chi-square test, the t-test for independent samples, ANOVA, the LSD post-hoc test and corelasion analyses. The study found that patients in the SGG group exhibited a significant reduction in anxiety levels and a significant increase in happiness levels compared with the control group (p<0.05). It was found that patients in the BRT group experienced a more pronounced reduction in anxiety levels and a significant increase in happiness levels compared to patients in both the VR and control groups (p<0.05). In conclusion, the study found a significant negative correlation between state anxiety and happiness scores in both experimental groups (p<0.05). It has been found that virtual reality glasses and the Benson relaxation technique are effective non-pharmacological nursing interventions that support the psychological well-being of patients following bariatric surgery; in particular, the Benson relaxation technique was found to be more effective than the virtual reality glasses intervention in reducing patients' anxiety levels and increasing their levels of happiness. Keywords: Anxiety, bariatric surgery, Benson relaxation technique, happiness, virtual reality.
