In this article which discussed the matter that the lover sees himself as a rival in the classical Turkish poetry, answers were sought for some questions such as “Can the lover be his own rival?” and “In what aspects is the lover the rival of himself?” In this study carried out in order to ground the opinion that the real rival is the lover himself, especially the divans belonging to leading poets in classical Turkish poetry were reviewed, and the aforementioned conclusion was reached with the support of the determined poem samples. It was understood that a number of characters which both arise from the lover himself and occur in the lover with the effect of the environment were obstacles to meeting with the lover and these obstacles were seen as rivals. In this article formed by reviewing the related sources and the collected poems, the words which recall the competitive type, such as “self, I, egotism, egocentricity, nafs, veil, curtain, obstacle”, were focused and the selected couplets and clauses were explained by using paraphrase method instead of giving their word-byword equivalence. It was hoped that the poem would be understood better by emphasizing on another aspect of the classical Turkish poetry in the “rival” approach, and humans get an opportunity to closely recognize themselves and their desires in the context of the lover.
