| dc.description.abstract | Reliable identification of cognitive and affective states from EEG data is important for both neuroscientific research and decision-support applications. The aim of this thesis is to classify mental performance and earthquake-related stress states from EEG signals with high accuracy and to make the resulting decisions interpretable at the lobe level. The main assumption of the study is that multichannel EEG signals contain spatial and temporal patterns that contribute to class discrimination and that these patterns can be represented by explainable feature engineering approaches. Transforming selected features into lobe-level symbolic representations was expected to make the decision process more interpretable. Two EEG datasets were used in the thesis. The mental performance dataset consists of 3,949 fifteen-second, 32-channel EEG segments obtained from 55 participants, whereas the stress dataset consists of 3,667 fifteen-second, 14-channel EEG segments obtained from 310 participants. Methodologically, CubicPat and MountPat feature extraction approaches were applied; selected features were determined using CWINCA, classification was performed with tkNN, and DLob provided lobe-level explainability. CubicPat achieved 99.70% accuracy in 10-fold cross-validation and 87.79% accuracy in LOSO evaluation on the mental performance dataset; the corresponding values for the stress dataset were 96.29% and 76.17%. MountPat produced 100.00% and 86.62% accuracy on the mental performance dataset, and 99.97% and 76.36% accuracy on the stress dataset. DLob analyses showed more distributed and multi-regional symbolic patterns for mental performance, whereas stress-related patterns were more concentrated along the frontal axis. As a result, this thesis proposes a lightweight, traceable, and interpretable analysis framework that jointly addresses high discriminative performance, subject-independent evaluation, and lobe-level explainability in EEG-based classification. | |
