This study investigates the effect of passive cooling methods on the performance enhancement of photovoltaic (PV) modules through experimental studies conducted in the hot climate conditions of Elazığ province in Turkey. The study, covering July, August, and September, involved the design of a system consisting of four panels, one of which was a reference panel. The first passive cooling system utilized RT-42 paraffin-based phase change material (PCM). The second cooling design involved the development of a nanoparticle-reinforced PCM composite to improve thermal conductivity and melt-freeze behavior. To determine the most suitable nanoparticle, CuO, ZnO, Al?O?, and SiO? nanoparticles were obtained, and nanocomposite samples formed with RT-42 were subjected to thermal and characterization tests. The analyses revealed that Al?O? was the most suitable additive in terms of phase transition stability, specific heat capacity (Cp), thermal resistance, microstructural homogeneity, and phase transition performance. Accordingly, in the second panel experimental setup, FDM with 1% Al?O? nanoparticles was used, and 3% sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was added to the mixture to ensure homogeneous distribution of the nanoparticles within the FDM. In the third configuration, in addition to this structure, 14 graphene-coated pin-tipped fins were placed on the outer surface of the aluminum housing into which the FDM was transferred. Experimental results have shown that the applied passive cooling methods reduce the panel surface temperature and improve electrical performance. Graphical analysis revealed that the graphene-coated finned panel (PV4) operated at approximately 13 °C lower temperature throughout the day compared to the reference panel. Consequently, the increase in power output was particularly pronounced in August, with the total daily power output of the PV4 panel exceeding the reference panel by approximately 105 W. In efficiency comparisons, passively cooled panels were found to provide 3% to 14% higher electrical conversion efficiency compared to the reference panel. Furthermore, the temperature distribution in the base, middle, and tip regions of the fin confirmed effective heat dissipation and demonstrated the formation of a stable temperature gradient along the fin. This study's innovation is the combined use of Al2O3–SDS-doped nanocomposite FDM and graphene-coated needle-tipped fin structure to achieve thermal regulation and electrical efficiency improvements in PV modules. The results demonstrate that this hybrid passive cooling approach can significantly reduce temperature-related efficiency losses and contribute to sustainable PV energy production.
