Macro-anatomical investigations of the hind limb bones in lynxes (Lynx lynx)

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the hind limb bones macro-anatomically. For this purpose 2 lynxes (Lynx lynx) were used. Every two os coxae were parallel to each other. Fossa acetabuli was deep, incisura acetabuli was wide. Foramen obturatum was pretty wide and oval. Crista iliaca was convex. Ramus cranialis ossis pubis was wide and this width had increased towards the acetabulum. Spina ischiadica was low and bump. Incisura ischiadica major and minor were not much prominent. Trochanter tertius was absent on the femur, a small protuberance shaped tuberositas supracondylaris was present on the condylus lateralis, condylus lateralis and condylus medialis were developed, hence fossa intercondylaris was deep and wide. Apex patellae was narrow, basis patellae was wide and triangle in shape. Eminentia intercondylaris was low. There was a big tuberositas tibia and sulcus tuberositas tibia was absent on this formation. The face of the distal end of the tibia, articulating with the tarsal bones was separated into oblique two articular fossa with a protuberance. Fibula was a thin bone articulating with the tibia proximally and distally on the lateral side. There was 5 metatarsus bones that were independent from each other and first metatarsus was rudimentary. In conclusion, the similarities and differences with other carnivorae species were determined by investigating the macro-anatomic features of hind limb bones in the lynx.
