Özet
Beauty has been defined in various ways and discussed within different contexts throughout history. From Ancient Greece to the modern era, numerous philosophers and artists have questioned the nature of beauty, generating diverse thoughts on whether it constitutes an absolute ideal or a relative phenomenon. While some perspectives argue that beauty is based on a universal and immutable principle, others claim that it varies depending on individual, cultural, and artistic contexts. This study explores the concept of beauty from both philosophical and artistic perspectives, questioning whether it should be considered an absolute ideal or a concept shaped by contextual variables. First, the definition of beauty is addressed, followed by an examination of philosophical approaches to the concept throughout history. A philosophical framework is established through the views of Kant who considered aesthetic judgment as a subjective experience Hegel, who interpreted beauty as a sensory manifestation of the absolute idea, and Heidegger, who approached beauty as an existential reality. The aim of this research is to investigate the relationship between beauty and art, and to evaluate the various understandings of beauty that have emerged throughout the history of art. In this context, the aesthetic understanding based on proportion and harmony in Ancient Greece is discussed, followed by the idealized human figure and the use of perspective in the Renaissance. Furthermore, the notions of grace and nobility are examined to demonstrate how they shaped the understanding of beauty. The study also emphasizes that beauty gains meaning only in contrast to ugliness, referencing Kant’s systematic interrelation of these two concepts. The relationship between aesthetics and art is analyzed in detail, investigating how beauty and ugliness have become intertwined with art over time and how they have influenced and transformed one another. Thus, the historical transformation and evolution of the concepts of beauty, ugliness, and art are presented in a holistic manner. This research was conducted using a qualitative methodology, with an extensive literature review employed to support the theoretical framework. As a result, within the scope of structuralist aesthetics, beauty and ugliness are interpreted as complementary binary oppositions. Beauty is conceptualized as a “signifier” that carries aesthetic value, while ugliness is understood as a diminished, distorted, or inverted form of that value. In this aesthetic context, ugliness is not perceived merely as a state of meaninglessness, but rather as a deviation or corruption of the inherent values of beauty.
