The Mamuratü'l-Aziz (Harput) region possessed significant geostrategic importance due to its geographical location and the trade routes passing through the area. Harput is surrounded by the Murat River Valley and the Bulutlu, Hasan, and Piran mountains. Prior to Ottoman rule, the region came under the domination of the Arabs, Artuqids, Seljuks, Mongols, Ilkhanids, Dulkadirids, Akkoyunlu, and Safavids. In 1516, Harput was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire and was initially attached to the Diyarbakır Province; however, its administrative status later changed, and during the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz, the region was renamed Mamuratü'l-Aziz. This study aims to examine the demographic structure of Harput primarily on the basis of the 1312 dated Mamuratü'l-Aziz Vilayet Yearbook. An evaluation of the yearbook demonstrates that approximately 60% of the population of Mamuratü'l-Aziz consisted of Muslims. Following the Muslim population, the demographic composition of the region was formed respectively by Armenians, Protestants, Catholics, Greeks, Latins, and Aliens. This demographic distribution indicates that nineteenth-century Harput hosted diverse ethnic and religious communities and thus exhibited a considerable degree of cultural richness.
