In computer networks, traffic classification plays a critical role in management and security. It is widely used by service providers, organizations, and security analysts for purposes such as network optimization, access control, attack detection, and anomaly analysis. Traditional methods perform classification either at the packet level, by inspecting packet content after parsing, or at the flow level, using flow-based statistical features. This thesis aims to develop a novel network traffic classification technique based on physical-layer signals, different from conventional approaches. The main hypothesis is that traffic contains information useful for classification even in its electrical signal form, which can be exploited through appropriate visualization and deep learning methods. In the study, packets from different protocols were collected to represent network traffic, retransmitted over the network, and captured using an oscilloscope. From these physical-layer signals, dedicated datasets (SigNet-6 and SigNet-10) were created. Packet signals in the datasets were visualized using eight different time-series and time-frequency-based techniques, and these visual representations were used to train nine different Convolutional Neural Network architectures. The results show that standardizing signal lengths and using scalogram representations significantly improved classification performance. Notably, the Darknet-53 and VGG16 architectures achieved accuracy rates above 99%. Furthermore, scalograms generated with different wavelet functions were found to directly affect classification performance. In conclusion, this thesis demonstrates that signal-level network traffic classification is feasible and effective. By providing dedicated datasets and systematic methodological steps, it contributes to the literature and offers a strong reference for both academic research and network traffic analysis applications.
