In this study, the gas permeability of nanocellulose (NC) filled-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite films has been investigated. The NS samples were prepared by acid hydrolysis (H2SO4) of microcrystalline cellulose. A solvent casting method was employed to fabricate PVA films. For this purpose, PVA was dissolved in water at 85 °C and was cast onto a glass plate. To prepare the filled films, NS was added to the PVA solution and stirred until a homogeneous mixture was obtained. The resulting suspension was then cast onto a glass plate using the same procedure as that for the neat PVA films. The fabricated films were kept in an oven at the temperature of 40 °C for 24 h and then kept at room temperature for another 24 h. The solid concentration and the particle size distribution of NS were determined. The thickness, SEM morphology, and tensile strength tests of the PVA films were also characterized. The permeability of N₂ and CO2 through the PVA films was measured using a dual-chamber gas permeation system. The membrane composite films were placed in between the upper and lower chambers of the permeation cell using leak-proof Teflon o-rings to provide gas-tight seal. The tracer gases were fed into the permeation cell at a predetermined pressure. The gas permeating through the membrane increased the pressure in the lower chamber. After the pressure in the lower chamber reached a constant value, the outlet gas flow rate from the permeation cell was measured. Based on these measurements, the gas permeability was calculated in Barrer. The experimental results were clearly that the produced NS was within the nanoscale range. The FTIR results of the synthesized NS confirmed that the structure was cellulose-based. Compared with pure PVA, the SEM images confirmed the presence of NS in the fabricated NS–PVA composite films. SEM images showed that the presence of NS became increasingly evident with increasing NS content in the PVA films. It was determined that the hardness, agglomeration, and ductility of the composite films increased with increasing NS content. The range of composite film thickness was 20 to 70 µm. The gas permeability test results showed that the volumetric flux values of both gases (N2 and CO2) through the synthesized PVA films were generally higher than those reported in the literature. It was determined that the N2 permeability was slightly higher than the CO2 permeability in both NS-filled and unfilled PVA films, although the values were very close. It was observed that the permeability of both N₂ and CO₂ through the PVA composite films tended to decrease with increasing temperature and pressure. For both probe gases, it was concluded that the permeability of the PVA films increased with increasing NS filler content. For future research, it is recommended that the permeability of different gases through the PVA membranes synthesized in this study be investigated, along with the development and evaluation of gas-selective membranes using different filler materials.
