Survivors of stroke and transient ischemic attacks (TIA) are at risk for recurrent stroke, which is often more severe and more disabling than the first attack. 90% of ischemic stroke, which is one of the leading causes of permanent disability, can be prevented, if necessary, precautions are taken. Therefore, the primary prophylaxis of initial stroke and the secondary prophylaxis of recurrent stroke are high priorities. In particular, the immediate and continuous application of secondary prophylaxis strategies has the potential to significantly reduce the burden of stroke. Hypertension is the most effective risk factor for ischemic strokes and transient ischemic attacks. In addition, high cholesterol, high sugar and insulin resistance, weight status, and dietary habits are also factors in the formation of ischemic attacks. Secondary prophylaxis aims to control all these risk factors with medication or lifestyle changes by adhering to the guidelines. Patients are required to follow these programs for a long time after they are discharged from the hospital. In this section, secondary prophylaxis approaches are discussed in the cases of ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack. © 2024 Nova Science Publishers, Inc. All rights reserved.
