SARAH KANE'İN OYUNLARINDA VAROLUŞSAL UMUTSUZLUK VE ÇARESİZLİK TEMASI

Abstract

Sarah Kane; İngiliz Edebiyatında, genç yaşındaki ölümüne rağmen adından söz ettirmiş sıra dışı bir oyun yazarıdır. Oyunlarında, insanın varoluşsal problemlerine odaklanan Sarah Kane, arzu, aşk, acı, fiziksel ve psikolojik şiddet gibi çeşitli izlekleri merkeze almıştır. Bu çalışmada beş oyun yazmış olan Sarah Kane'in, tercih edilen yaklaşımlara daha yakın olması sebebiyle üç oyunu, varoluşçu felsefe ve suratına tiyatro merkeze alınarak değerlendirilmiştir. Sarah Kane'in 1990'lı yıllarda yazdığı oyunlarının, dönemin sosyo-politik ortamının etkisiyle suratına tiyatro ve varoluşçu felsefeyle ilişkisi çeşitli ölçütler esas alınarak analiz edilmiştir. Ayrıca oyunlar, varoluşsal umutsuzluk ve çaresizlik temaları etrafında incelenmiştir. Çalışmanın birinci bölümünde yazarın biyografisi incelenerek oyunlarının, kendi hayatından ne ölçüde izler taşıdığı gösterilmiştir. Kane'in edebi kişiliği ve yazdığı oyunlarla ilgili çeşitli bilgiler verilmiştir. 1990'lı yıllarda İngiltere'nin sosyal ve politik durumu özetlenerek, dönemin ön plana çıkan yazarlarının tercih ettiği konuları belirleyen dinamiklerle ilgili değerlendirmeler yapılmıştır. "In-Yer-Face" ya da suratına olarak bilinen tiyatro türünün ortaya çıkışı ve bu türün belli başlı temaları ele alınmıştır ve Sarah Kane'in suratına tiyatro ile olan ilişkisi irdelenmiştir. Varoluşçuluk felsefesinin ortaya çıkışı, edebiyata yansımaları ve temel aldığı düşüncelerle ilgili bilgiler verilmiştir. Böylece, bu çalışmada Sarah Kane'in eserlerinde karşımıza çıkan karakterlerin, varoluşçuluk felsefesiyle olan ilişkisi ilgili değerlendirmelerde bulunmak amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmanın ikinci bölümünde ise Sarah Kane'in Blasted, Crave ve 4.48 Pychosis oyunlarında, varoluşsal umutsuzluk ve çaresizlik teması oyunlardan yapılan alıntılarla beraber değerlendirilmiştir.

Sarah Kane is an extraordinary playwright in English Literature who made a name for herself despite her death at a young age. Focusing on existential problems of human being in her plays, Sarah Kane has centered on various themes such as desire, love, pain, physical and psychological violence. Sarah Kane wrote five plays, but in this study three plays of Sarah Kane are examined through existentialist philosophy and in-yer-face theatre because they are more related to the chosen approaches. The relationship among in-yer-face theatre, existentialist philosophy and Sarah Kane's plays, which were written in 1990s, are analyzed on the basis of various criteria regarding socio-political environment of the period. In addition, the plays are explored around the themes of existential despair and helplessness. In the first section of the study, the playwright's biography is examined and the extent to which her plays have traces of her own life is analyzed. The purpose of the present study is to give information about Kane's literary personality and her plays. Evaluations are made on the dynamics that determined the subjects adopted by the prominent writers of the period, by summarizing the social and political situation of England in 1990s. The emergence of in-yer-face theatre and the major themes of this genre are discussed and the relationship between this genre and Sarah Kane are examined. Information about the emergence of existentialist philosophy, its reflections on literature and the ideas it was based on was given. Thus, the aim of the study is to evaluate the relationship between the characters of Sarah Kane and the philosophy of existentialism. In the second section of the study, the theme of existential despair and helplessness in Sarah Kane's Blasted, Crave and 4.48 Pychosis plays are tried to be evaluated with quotations.
