Development of the Critical Writing Scale: Validity and Reliability Study

Abstract

In this study, the validity and reliability studies of the “Critical Writing Scale” were reported. In the development of the scale, the literature was first analyzed. An item pool of 40 items was created according to the literature, and the scale was reduced to 32 items in line with expert opinions. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were conducted to test the construct validity of the scale. EFA of the scale was conducted at Fırat University Faculty of Education and CFA of the scale was conducted on pre-service teachers studying Turkish and English at Dicle University Faculty of Education. A total of 362 pre-service teachers in two separate groups constituted the participants of the study. According to EFA, it was determined that the scale had nineteen items and a three-factor structure. According to CFA fit indices, this structure was confirmed. In order to determine the reliability of the scale, Cronbach's alpha (?) internal consistency coefficient was calculated and found to be .88. The obtained data indicate that the scale has acceptable values. As a result of both validity and reliability studies, a scale with 3 sub-dimensions and 19 items was obtained. Analyses revealed that the scale is usable for pre-service teachers.

Bu çalışmada “Eleştirel Yazma Ölçeğinin” geçerlik ve güvenirlik çalışmaları raporlaştırılmıştır. Ölçeğinin geliştirilmesinde öncelikle alanyazın incelenmiştir. Alanyazına göre 40 maddelik madde havuzu oluşturulmuş, uzman görüşleri doğrultusunda ölçek 32 maddeye indirgenmiştir. Ölçeğin yapı geçerliğini test etmek amacıyla açımlayıcı faktör analizi (AFA) ve doğrulayıcı faktör analizi (DFA) yapılmıştır. Ölçeğin AFA’sı Fırat Üniversitesi Eğitim Fakültesi’nde, DFA’sı ise Dicle Üniversitesi Eğitim Fakültesi Türkçe ve İngilizce öğrenim görmekte olan öğretmen adayları üzerinde yürütülmüştür. İki ayrı grupta toplam 362 öğretmen adayı araştırmanın katılımcılarını oluşturmaktadır. AFA’ya göre ölçeğin on dokuz maddeli ve üç faktörlü bir yapısının olduğu belirlenmiştir. DFA uyum indekslerine göre bu yapı doğrulanmıştır. Ölçeğin güvenirliğini tespit etmek amacıyla Cronbach alfa (?) iç tutarlılık katsayısı hesaplanmış ve .88 olarak bulunmuştur. Elde edilen veriler ölçeğin kabul edilebilir değerlere sahip olduğu ifade etmektedir. Hem geçerlik hem de güvenirlik çalışmaları sonucunda, 3 alt boyuta ve 19 maddeye sahip bir ölçek elde edilmiştir. Yapılan analizler ölçeğin öğretmen adayları için kullanılabilir nitelikte olduğunu ortaya koymuştur.
