The Kâr Form in the Ferahfezâ Makam: An Examination of Dede Efendi’s Musical Style

Abstract

This study aims to examine the kâr composed by one of the prominent composers of classical Turkish music, Hammâmî-zâde İsmail Dede Efendi, in the Ferahfezâ makam from historical, aesthetic, and structural perspectives. Within the framework of Dede Efendi’s artistic identity shaped by Mevlevi training, the research emphasizes his individual creativity and distinctive style within traditional musical forms. The study is not limited to a single composition analysis; rather, it offers a comprehensive interpretation of the period’s aesthetic understanding through the structural components of classical form, the relationship between makam and usûl, the harmony between poetic text and melody, the use of terennüm, dramatic organization, and melodic construction. The study adopts a qualitative research design based on a descriptive analytical approach. The work is systematically evaluated in terms of form, structure, and content, and the arrangement of terennüm phrases, diversity of usûl patterns, makam transitions, and melodic contours are analyzed in detail. The findings reveal that Dede Efendi applied classical forms with technical mastery while simultaneously developing a highly aesthetic, innovative, and original style. The Ferahfezâ Kâr occupies a distinguished position in the classical Turkish music repertoire, both historically and artistically.

Bu çalışma, klasik Türk mûsikîsinin önemli bestekârlarından Hammâmî-zâde İsmail Dede Efendi’nin Ferahfezâ makamında bestelediği kâr formundaki eserini tarihsel, estetik ve biçimsel yönleriyle incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Araştırmada, Mevlevî terbiyesiyle şekillenen Dede Efendi’nin sanatsal kimliği bağlamında, geleneksel mûsikî formlarındaki bireysel yaratıcılık gücü ve özgün üslûbu ön plana çıkarılmaktadır. Çalışma, yalnızca belirli bir eser analizi ile sınırlı kalmayıp; klasik formun yapısal bileşenleri, makam ve usûl ilişkisi, güfte-melodi uyumu, terennüm kullanımı, dramatik yapı ve melodik kurgunun detayları üzerinden dönemin estetik anlayışını anlamaya yönelik kapsamlı bir çözümleme sunmaktadır. Yöntem olarak nitel araştırma desenine dayalı betimsel analiz yaklaşımı benimsenmiştir. Eser; form, yapı ve içerik bakımından sistematik olarak ele alınmış, terennüm cümlelerinin düzeni, usûl çeşitliliği, makam geçkileri ve melodik kıvrımlar ayrıntılı şekilde analiz edilmiştir. İnceleme, Dede Efendi’nin klasik formları teknik ustalıkla uygularken aynı zamanda yüksek estetik duyarlılık, yenilikçilik ve özgünlük sergileyen bir üslûp geliştirdiğini ortaya koymaktadır. Ferahfezâ Kâr’ı, klasik Türk mûsikîsi repertuvarında hem tarihî hem sanatsal açıdan seçkin bir yere sahiptir.
