Bir Savaşın “Meçhul Mekânı”: Antiokheia Mı? Alaşehir Mi? 1211 Tarihli Bizans-Selçuklu Savaşının Menderes Antiokheiası’nda Vuku Bulduğuna Dair Tespitler

Abstract

Antiokheia Savaşı, nedenleri ve sonuçları itibariyle Bizans İmparatorluğu ve Türkiye Selçukluları arasında gerçekleşen en önemli muharebelerden biridir. Sürecin öncesi ve sonrası gerek politik gerekse de askerî ilişkiler bağlamında akademik çalışmalara sıkça konu olmuştur. Fakat orduların karşı karşıya geldiği mekân başta olmak üzere muharebenin vuku bulduğu tarih, tarafların asker sayıları ve Sultan I. Gıyâseddin Keyhüsrev’in muğlak ölümü gibi belirsizlikler hâlen sürmektedir. Kaynakların çelişkili ve farklı anlatılar içermeleri bunun temel sebebidir. Çalışmamızda özellikle mekân üzerine olan belirsizliğe yoğunlaşılmıştır. Giriş kısmında savaşa ön ayak olan gelişmelere muhtasar ölçüde değinilmiş ve ardından kaynakların tenkit ve değerlendirilmesi yapılmıştır. Bu noktada savaşın gerçekleştiği yer hakkında bilgi içeren kaynaklar ele alınmıştır. İlerleyen bölümlerde ise modern literatürün konu hakkındaki yorum ve önerileri de göz önüne alınarak birtakım sonuçlar çıkarılmıştır. Ayrıca araştırma süreci içerisinde elde edilen veriler ArcGIS programları kullanılarak dijitalize edilmiştir. Nikepheros Gregoras’ın belirtmiş olduğu önemli bir anekdottan hareketle iki yerin topografik incelemeleri yapılmış ve savaşın seyrine etki etmiş olabilecek coğrafî unsurlar saptanmaya çalışılmıştır. Sonuç olarak ana kaynaklar, modern araştırmalar ve coğrafî bilgi sistemleri araştırmanın temel argümanlarına yön vermiştir.

Considering its causes and consequences, the battle of Antioch is one of the most significant struggle between the Byzantine Empire and the Salj?qs. The events before and after the battle have frequently been the subject of academic studies in the context of political and military relations. However, some uncertainties such as the place, and exact date of the battle, the size of the armies, and the ambiguous death of the Ghiy?th al-D?n I Kaykhusraw remain. The main reason for this situation is the contradictory and different narratives of historical sources. This study is focused only on the uncertainty of where the battle occurred. In the introduction, the events leading to the battle have been dealt with concisely, and then the sources have been criticized and evaluated. At this point, sources that provide information about the place where the battle took place are discussed. In the following sections, some conclusions have been drawn, taking into account the comments and suggestions of the modern literature on the subject. In addition, the data obtained during the research process were digitized using ArcGIS programs. Based on an important anecdote stated by Nicephorus Gregoras, topographic examinations of both Antioch and Alasehir were made and geographical elements that might have affected the course of the battle were tried to be determined. Consequently, historiography, modern research, and geographic information systems have shaped the main arguments of the research.
