| dc.description.abstract | Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder affecting a large population worldwide and is characterized by recurrent seizures. Failure to detect epileptic seizures accurately and in a timely manner complicates effective disease management and negatively impacts patients' quality of life. Electroencephalography (EEG) is one of the most widely used tools in the diagnosis and monitoring of epilepsy; however, the nonlinear, nonstationary, and high-dimensional nature of EEG signals makes manual analysis time-consuming and prone to subjective interpretation. Consequently, there is an increasing demand for automated, objective, and reliable computational methods for epileptic seizure detection. In this thesis, a hybrid deep learning approach based on time–frequency representations of EEG signals is proposed for the automatic detection of epileptic seizures. EEG signals are first transformed into two-dimensional time–frequency images using the Complex Morlet Wavelet Transform (CMT), Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT), and Fast Continuous Wavelet Transform (FCWT). These representations are then analyzed using two complementary deep learning architectures: the convolutional neural network–based ResNet-18 and the attention-based Vision Transformer (ViT-B/8). Discriminative features extracted from each model are subsequently combined through a feature fusion strategy to construct a more comprehensive and informative feature space. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed hybrid framework achieves high classification performance in epileptic EEG signal analysis. In particular, the joint use of features extracted from ResNet-18 and ViT-B/8 yields superior results compared to individual models, achieving an overall classification accuracy of 90.65%. These findings indicate that integrating time–frequency analysis with deep learning–based feature fusion provides an effective, robust, and clinically applicable solution for automatic epileptic seizure detection and holds significant potential for integration into clinical decision support systems. | |
